What Functional Labs Reveal That Conventional Medicine Misses
The bloodwork came back clean. Your doctor said everything looks normal. And yet — waking up in the middle of the night has become routine. The afternoon crash is predictable. No matter what you try, the midsection weight isn’t moving, and something still feels off.
The problem might not be what you’re doing. It might be what the tests aren’t designed to catch.
Katie Hardie is a Board-Certified Holistic Nutritionist and FDN Practitioner whose work starts exactly where conventional medicine stops. For women entrepreneurs focused on holistic health, this is a conversation worth having — because if you feel like crap, good luck running a successful business. Katie explains what standard lab ranges are actually measuring, what chronic stress quietly does to your hormones while you’re still in go-mode, and how to start getting answers that reflect your specific body — not a national average.
This one is for the woman who has been told she’s fine, even though she knows she isn’t.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- Why conventional lab ranges don’t tell you if you’re healthy — only whether you’ve crossed into outright dysfunction
- What cortisol is doing to your body when you’re in constant go-mode, and why it can feel like energy at first
- How gut health connects directly to your mood, focus, sleep, and motivation
- Why fasting insulin is a better early indicator than fasting blood sugar — and how to ask for it
- The first steps to take when your labs look normal, but something still feels off

The Iceberg Beneath Your Lab Results — What Holistic Health for Women Entrepreneurs Uncovers
One of the most useful things Katie shares in this episode is something most women have never been told about their own bloodwork. Standard lab ranges are drawn from a population that is, on average, overweight, sedentary, and metabolically compromised. So “normal” on a conventional lab report doesn’t mean healthy — it means you haven’t crossed into outright dysfunction yet.
Think of it as an iceberg: 10% visible above the water, most of it building below the surface where you can’t see it. That doesn’t mean it isn’t there. And it certainly doesn’t mean it can’t eventually do damage.
This is where conventional medicine and a functional approach part ways. Conventional medicine catches problems once they’re loud enough to see. A functional approach looks for where you sit between optimal and dysfunctional — before things go wrong. For women entrepreneurs who have been pushing hard and wondering why they feel off when their paperwork says otherwise, that distinction matters.
The Fight-or-Flight Loop Most Women Don’t Recognize
Here’s what’s actually happening inside your body when you’re running your business, managing your household, and pushing through the afternoon on caffeine and willpower.
“When you’re go, go, going, your body is in a fight or flight sympathetic mode … whether it’s a mental, biochemical, or physical stressor on the body, your body has the same physiological reaction.” — Katie Hardie

Your body releases sugar into the bloodstream under stress so your muscles can respond — whether a tiger is actually chasing you or you’re sitting at your desk thinking about your to-do list. That response was built to last seconds to minutes. When it runs for hours, days, and years, the sugar circulating in your bloodstream starts damaging your blood vessels. Over time, that’s where the higher blood pressure, the stiffness, the hardened arteries come from.
In the short term, though? You feel great. Sharp. Energized. On. That’s the part nobody tells you — and it’s exactly why so many high-performing women don’t catch what’s building until it’s already loud.
Why Adding More Never Solves the Problem
Here’s what makes this particularly hard for women entrepreneurs: the conventional advice for feeling better tends to make things worse.
“We’re layering stressor upon stressor upon stressor to deal with our stressors.” — Katie Hardie

Eating less. Working out more. Cutting entire macronutrient groups. Running a half-marathon to shift the midsection weight. These are all physical stressors — and when layered on top of a nervous system already running in fight-or-flight, they push the body further into the dysfunction you’re trying to fix. Meanwhile, the people around you are applauding the effort. Nobody is asking whether you’ve given yourself a moment to actually recover.
The body always takes care of today’s demands at the expense of tomorrow’s longer-term work — producing sex hormones, producing digestive enzymes, keeping the thyroid functioning at its pace. When you keep pushing everything to tomorrow, those systems start shutting down. That’s where the hormonal imbalance, the bloat, the thyroid sluggishness, and the weight that won’t move come from.
Your Symptoms Aren’t “Just the Way It Is”
This is the part of the episode that is likely to stay with a lot of women — because most of us have been told, at some point, to simply accept what our bodies are doing.
“It’s common. It’s just not normal. There shouldn’t be perimenopausal symptoms … that’s usually not just a hormone imbalance, it’s usually liver congestion. And that’s the thing, a lot of people aren’t looking at.” — Katie Hardie

Common is not the same as unavoidable. Katie’s work is in finding out why something is happening inside your specific body — your cortisol pattern, your DHEA levels, your fasting insulin, your gut microbiome — and making adjustments that actually fit your biology. Not the average. You.
What Your Gut Is Actually Telling You
A consistent thread throughout this conversation is the connection between gut health and how you think, feel, and function day to day. Neurotransmitters — the chemical messengers behind mood, motivation, and your ability to calm down and sleep — are largely produced in the gut. When the microbiome is out of balance, the effects show up in places most people never connect back to digestion: anxiety, low drive, disrupted sleep, and afternoon brain fog.
And yet the conventional first response is often to address the symptom directly, without asking what’s driving it. A functional approach looks upstream instead — because the root cause might be in the gut, in the hormones, or in a liver too congested to do its job.
Practically, you don’t have to overhaul everything at once to start getting answers. Looking at your existing bloodwork through a tighter functional range costs nothing and can reveal what your standard results are glossing over. Or go further with functional labs — blood, urine, stool, saliva — to see what’s building beneath the surface. The point isn’t to add more to your plate. It’s to stop guessing and start working with real information about your specific body — because you deserve answers that actually account for you.
