You Know How to Give. Do You Know How to Receive?

For most high-achieving women, giving is second nature. Receiving is the skill no one ever taught us. It's also the one quietly keeping us depleted.

You give to your clients, your team, your kids, your partner, your friends. Then someone tries to give something back — help, a compliment, money, rest — and out it comes: "Oh no, I couldn't possibly."

That reflex is costing you more than you think. And receiving, it turns out, can be learned.

Receiving is the ability to accept support, money, opportunity, rest, and recognition without guilt, deflection, or feeling you must earn it first. In my work as a business coach, I teach receiving as something much bigger than simply being open to getting more. Receiving isn’t selfish or passive, it’s a skill, and it’s part of the natural order.

What Does It Mean to Receive?

Receiving is the ability to let something in — support, money, help, love, rest, opportunity, recognition — without guilt, deflection, or the sense that you have to earn it first. It sounds simple. For many accomplished women, it's one of the hardest things in the world.

We tend to treat receiving as passive, or even a little selfish, as though the virtuous thing is always to be the one giving. But receiving isn't the absence of effort. It's a distinct skill — and most of us were never taught it.

Receiving is not selfish. It's a skill. And it's part of the natural order.

Which is why you can be endlessly generous, capable, and successful, and still feel strangely empty. Giving without receiving isn't wealth. It's depletion with good manners.

The Night I Realized I Didn't Know How to Receive

I learned this in my own life, and not gently.

It was a Friday night in the middle of my divorce. My daughters were out with their significant others. Their dad was away with his girlfriend. I'd spent the day, like most days, making sure every single person in my family was full, handled, and happy. And there I was, Friday night, walking the dog. Again.

I'd made sure everyone else had everything they needed. And I had completely forgotten about me.

That was the moment it hit me: I knew how to give. I did not know how to receive.

That realization is what led me to create The Art of Receiving. I saw that this had to become something we study as women. It's the natural order of things that we receive. And when we interrupt that order, everything goes wrong.

Why Receiving Is Part of the Natural Order

Nothing in nature apologizes for participating in the exchange. A tree gives oxygen and receives carbon dioxide. The earth receives rain and produces food. The cycle only works because both halves happen.

Imagine if the trees said, "Oh no, carbon dioxide, I couldn't possibly." Everything dies. That's not humility. That's a broken cycle.

That's exactly what we do when we only give. We overgive. We over-function. We refuse support. We exhaust ourselves — and then wonder why we feel depleted despite a life that looks abundant from the outside. We've interrupted the natural order, and wealth can't circulate through a cycle that's only running one way.

Give. Receive. Create. Circulate. Again and again.

Signs You Struggle to Receive

Difficulty receiving almost never announces itself as "I can't receive." It hides inside behaviors that look responsible, generous, and strong. You might struggle to receive if you:

  • Deflect compliments, or immediately return them instead of just saying thank you
  • Feel guilty or uncomfortable when someone does something for you
  • Insist on doing everything yourself because asking for help feels like weakness
  • Over-give to your kids, team, or clients — sometimes to the point of quiet resentment
  • Undercharge, or struggle to let yourself be paid what you're worth
  • Wait for outside validation before you'll believe you deserve something
  • Collapse rest and self-care to the very bottom of the list, every time

If you recognized yourself in several of those, you're in good company — and none of it means something is wrong with you. It means you learned to give and never got taught the other half.

Receiving, Money, and the Trap of Outside Validation

Nowhere is difficulty receiving more expensive than with money. I see it constantly: women who can comfortably take a salary from a corporate job but freeze when it's time to charge for their own work.

The reason is revealing. A salary is outside validation — someone else has decided you're worth the money, so you don't have to. But charging for your own business means validating your own worth, with no one else to sign off on it. That's where the block lives.

You are the one who has to decide you're worthy. No amount of outside validation will ever do it for you.

This is why receiving isn't a soft, secondary topic. It sits right at the center of what you earn, what you charge, and what you allow yourself to keep.

How to Learn to Receive

Because receiving is a skill, it can be practiced — and it gets easier. It rarely starts with a grand gesture. It starts with small, deliberate moments of letting something in when every instinct says to deflect. In practice, that looks like:

  • Saying "thank you" and stopping there — no deflecting, no returning the compliment
  • Letting someone help without managing exactly how they do it
  • Naming what you actually need instead of quietly handling everything yourself
  • Charging your real price, then allowing the payment to land without apology
  • Accepting rest, support, or care before everything else is "handled"
  • Noticing the "oh no, I couldn't possibly" reflex — and choosing to receive anyway
  • Deciding you're worthy on the inside, rather than waiting to be told

None of this is passive. Receiving well takes more courage than giving ever did. That's precisely why it changes things.

Receiving Is the Skill. Wealth Consciousness Is What It Unlocks.

You cannot experience wealth you won't let yourself receive. That's why receiving sits at the center of Wealth Consciousness — the larger practice of your ability to experience, receive, and sustain wealth across money, work, relationships, health, time, and purpose. It's the philosophy that connects everything — receiving, your relationship with money, scarcity, and abundance — into one coherent way of living and leading.
