Episode 18: Why On Earth Did You Do That?

What on earth made you act like that? Why did you say that? What’s wrong with you?

If you’re like most human beings, you might have thoughts like this in the shower, or when you first wake up.

So what the heck is that about? What’s motivating thoughts like this and do they drive you to make meaningful change?

Or do they just make you feel awful?

Let’s dive in, together, to learn a little bit more about what’s motivating you.

In this episode we look into exactly why you did say that, why you don’t stick to your plans and what takes you off track.

I’ll talk to you about what the three major drivers for motivation that I’ve come to see in women and where they come from.

For most women, the major drivers are:

Ego (and no, not the “Hey! Look at me! I’m amazing!” ego, but rather the part of your being that wants you to stay safe, the one that keeps you small and pulled back and asking questions like, “Why did you say that?”

Then we’ll talk about contribution. It’s one of the biggest motivators for human behavior, which is a good thing. But so often for women, we give to the point of exhausted, or worse, rage. We’ll talk about how to avoid that and how to contribute in a way that feels good and doesn’t leave you exhausted.

Finally we’ll talk about your environment. There’s an idea you’ve probably heard before that states if you take the average salary of the 5 people you hang out with most, you’ll find that it’s about what you make.

Interesting, right? Imagine how much influence and motivation the people you hand out with have on you. What are your common conversations? How do you pass the time? How do you view money? How aware are you of your ego and your contributions?

You’ll want to grab a pen and a journal for this one, as I hope you’ll take notes, really put yourself into the conversation and learn a little bit more about what motivates you.

‘Cause, you know. I don’t want you thinking, “Why on earth did I do that?” or “Why did I say that?” in the shower tomorrow morning.

Oh, and if you haven’t listened to episode 5, “You’re Not Special” it’s a good compliment to this episode. Click here to check it out.
