What Golden Bricks Taught Roberta Ravella About Building a Business in Joy

My guest this week spent 25 years in the mortgage business, and by her own account, she was good at it. She had the tools, the strategy, and sticky notes covering an entire wall. Still, she told me, there came a point where she looked at everything she’d built and thought: I have golden bricks, and I can’t build anything out of them.

Roberta Ravella is the founder of The Joy Experiment. Her path here wasn’t a straight line. It ran through mortgage origination, a marketing coaching business, and a dissolved AI startup with a friend. Then came a six-week reset that reshaped how she starts every morning. That reset is where she landed on joy as a default setting, instead of something she had to earn after the to-do list was done.

Have you ever done everything “right” and still couldn’t make yourself keep going? This episode is for you.

    In this episode, you’ll hear:

    • What it actually took for Roberta to walk away from an AI business just two months after starting it
    • The difference between your priorities and your energetic values — and why confusing the two keeps you stuck
    • How years of stomach pain led Roberta to nervous system work she didn’t know she needed
    • Why Roberta says “your definition of easy needs to grow up”
    • What it looks like to build a business where joy comes first, instead of last

The Business Built on Golden Bricks She Couldn’t Use

Roberta spent 25 years as a mortgage originator, the person on the other end of the line offering a lower rate or a first-home loan. Toward the end of that career, she found coaching, and then marketing. Something in her brain lit up: business didn’t have to be a pure numbers game. It could be built around values, around who you actually wanted to talk to.

Then she and her husband moved from Northern Virginia to Houston, and later to Florida. Each time, she rebuilt the same business — numbers game and all. Eventually, standing in her own office, surrounded by every tool and strategy she owned, she couldn’t make herself keep going anymore.

When She Couldn’t Force Herself Anymore

After the mortgage business, Roberta moved into marketing and coaching, and eventually opened an AI marketing company with a friend. About two months in, something in her said no. Not “this is hard” — something closer to a full-body refusal. She and her business partner dissolved the company amicably. Her mentor then sent her on a six-week break with one instruction: shut it all off.

That break, plus a trip to Italy, is where The Joy Experiment was born.

Priorities Aren’t the Same Thing as Values

Roberta draws a clear line between two kinds of values. On one side are the ones she’d been handed — legacy, wealth, high achievement, the kind you’d find listed on a standard values card. On the other are what she calls energetic values: the things that actually give you energy, instead of draining it. She spent time helping her own clients tell the two apart, and it reshaped how she built her business from the ground up.

“Your energetic values are what bring you energy naturally. It’s where you can play and live, and it just — it feels like purpose. It feels like you.” — Roberta Ravella

The Nervous System Was the Missing Piece

Roberta describes years of stomach pain she’d stopped noticing because it was just how she lived. It wasn’t until a friend bluntly told her that her nervous system was fried that things started to shift. From there, she layered in that kind of healing alongside the identity work she’d already been doing. The stomach pain stopped. On a vacation, she found herself snorkeling without a life jacket for the first time — not because she’d stopped caring, but because she’d finally loosened her grip.

“I did not realize how long I had lived punishing myself.” — Roberta Ravella

Your Definition of Easy Needs to Grow Up

Roberta is blunt about what ease isn’t. The “sit on a beach and a million dollars appears” version, she says, is a childhood fantasy, not a business model. The grown-up version looks different. You stop hunting for what’s hard, and you stop treating discipline as a personality trait. Instead, you build systems — her lighting, her setup, her “not on the podcast list” wardrobe rule — so you’re not white-knuckling your way through avoidable stress.

Joy as a Default Setting, Not a Reward

The core of Roberta’s work now comes down to one idea: joy as a default setting, not something you earn. She used to wake up running through her entire task list before she’d even opened her eyes. Now, most mornings, that’s not the first thought at all.

“Joy isn’t the place you get to when all the things you have to do are done. It’s the place where you start.” — Roberta Ravella

    About Roberta Ravella

Roberta Ravella is the founder and creator of The Joy Experiment — the heart and science of creating your life and business in joy, ease, and flow. After 25 years in mortgage origination, she moved through marketing and coaching before recognizing that alignment with her own values, not just better strategy, was what had been missing. That realization led her to develop work around energetic values, nervous system healing, and eventually The Joy Experiment itself — a business and a body of work built on the idea that joy can be a starting point rather than a reward.
