The Mother Line Starts Closer to Home Than You’d Think
My guest this week studies something most of us avoid: death. She’s spent forty years at it, as a pathologist performing autopsies. What she found along the way wasn’t morbid. It was the opposite — she found more life force in a room full of the dead than she usually found walking around on an ordinary day.
Sabine O’Laughlin, MD, is a pathologist and functional wellness coach for women late-diagnosed with ADHD or AuDHD. In this episode, she introduces something she calls the mother line: the idea that everybody has one mother, whatever your relationship with her looks like, and that mother gave you exactly one thing — your life. Sabine says that until you can accept that fully, you stay closed off to receiving — not just love, but all areas of life, including money.
This is going to be one of the most important podcast episodes you ever listen to. I know that’s a big thing for me to say, and I don’t usually say things like that. But in this episode, I have a conversation with Sabine about the mother line. Now, this is so near and dear to my heart, and the work I’m doing on planet Earth to make sure we put more money in the hands of more women. But more than that, it’s about the truth behind wealth consciousness. Today’s guest, Sabine, is going to blow your mind as she talks about what the access point is to true wealth consciousness.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- What the mother line actually asks you to accept about your own mother, and why most people resist it
- What “a little bit dead” looks like in your body, your posture, and your voice
- Why the giver, not the taker, is usually the one who kills a relationship
- What it might mean if you’ve always felt like the black sheep of your family
- What happened when Sabine’s own mother died, and how it turned into four decades studying death for a living

Forty Years of Studying Death, and What It Taught Her About Life
Sabine didn’t plan on any of this. She was on a performing arts track — and what she actually wanted to be was an exotic dancer. Then, when Sabine was twenty, her mother died. From there, she spent the next four decades studying death professionally — first as a pathologist doing autopsies, later coaching people from inside her own pathology office, without fully realizing at first that’s what she’d started doing.
“The more you study death, the more you get life… You can’t really take a client where you haven’t gone yourself.” — Sabine O’Laughlin
In the morgue, she says, there was nothing left to perform. Nobody cared what you were wearing when you died. It didn’t matter how much money was in your account, or how you looked to the room. Whatever illusions people spend a lifetime holding up were gone, and what was left was true — and that’s when she felt most alive.
What “a Little Bit Dead” Actually Looks Like
Sabine has a phrase for what happens to most of us long before we actually die: we go a little bit dead. Any place where you’re not free to be yourself, she says, counts. Maybe you’ve learned to hold back a certain emotion, or mute your voice. Or maybe you’ve become a version of yourself your caretakers needed, instead of the one you actually are.
You can see it in how people carry their bodies. A tight jaw and neck from being told not to speak too loudly. Or a hunched posture from carrying shame nobody ever named. Sabine can watch someone walk into a room and know, before they say a word, what they learned to hold back a long time ago.
“Deadness is basically any way that you are not free to be yourself — telling yourself a story about yourself to be something you don’t even know, or not having access to certain emotions you don’t even know.” — Sabine O’Laughlin

None of this is anyone’s fault, and it doesn’t start with you. It’s adaptive. As a child, being what your caretakers needed you to be was how you stayed safe. But the adaptation outlives its usefulness. And awareness, Sabine says, is the first place to start changing it.
The Mother Line: What It Takes to Actually Receive
This is the part of the conversation that stunned me. Sabine calls it the mother line — the line of the mothers. To me, it’s the most direct explanation I’ve heard of what actually gets in the way of receiving. You may not like your mother. Maybe you’ve never met her. Perhaps you love her completely, or want nothing to do with her. None of that changes one fact: you have a mother, and she gave you the one thing nobody else could — your life.
“Everybody has one mother, and this mother gave you the most important one thing: she gave you life… if you can take that in as a hundred percent from what she had to give, you can now receive.” — Sabine O’Laughlin

Sabine isn’t saying you have to like your mother, or even claim a relationship with her. Rejecting her — even quietly, even only internally — is a rejection of the source of your own life. Mother, she says, is the symbol of the whole exchange: giving, receiving, wealth, abundance, life itself. Reject that source, and you limit what you’re available to receive everywhere else. Money included.
I felt that one in my body while we were talking. My own mother and I don’t have a relationship, and this work isn’t easy. Still, Sabine was clear it’s not a life sentence. It doesn’t start with your mother, either. Whatever she was carrying, she was likely carrying because of what had been handed to her — the same pattern, one line further back.
The Giver Kills the Relationship, Not the Taker
Sabine’s work draws on family systems, and three principles hold it together:
- Everybody belongs. You can’t opt out — trying to creates all kinds of problems.
- There’s an order. Those who came before were simply there first.
- There’s a balance of give and receive. When it’s off, things stop working.
That third one, she said, is a big one for women.
“Money is not a commodity. Money is a relationship.” — Sabine O’Laughlin
Here’s the part most people never say out loud: it’s the giver, not the taker, who kills the relationship. Over-give, and you elevate yourself above the other person. At the same time, you make sure they can never fully receive from you, or give back. Sabine told me she did exactly this in her own life. She gave money to partners so consistently that they could never reciprocate, until the imbalance itself pushed them away. It wasn’t generosity working against her. This was control, dressed up as generosity.
If You’ve Always Felt Like the Black Sheep
I asked Sabine about something that comes up again and again: the feeling of not belonging in your own family, of being the one who’s different, the one who’s excluded, the black sheep.
“Everybody does belong… When somebody gets excluded in a family system, somebody later in the generations will represent this person — being like them, paying a debt for them, being sick for them, dying for them, leaving like them — in an attempt to bring that excluded person back. It’s not conscious.” — Sabine O’Laughlin
Feeling like the outsider isn’t usually random, in other words. It’s frequently a role, unconsciously inherited, standing in for someone earlier in the family line who actually was shut out. Left unaddressed, the pattern tends to repeat. And it tends to get worse with each generation, until somebody does the work to name it.
What Changes When You Clear Generational Money Blocks
When women do this work on the mother line, Sabine says, the shift shows up everywhere: better relationships, more ease with their own mothers, even the difficult ones, and more access to wealth and health. Business runs on the same dynamic, she pointed out. Your business is mother too, in the sense that it’s another relationship you either let yourself fully receive from, or don’t.
If you can’t take in the source for the wealth, Sabine says, nothing you buy will ever quite work.
“Money is an energy. It’s not a thing.” — Sabine O’Laughlin
You can hit a revenue goal, buy the house, buy the car. That two-week high still fades into needing the next thing. It’s an inside job, Sabine says — and no course or protocol substitutes for actually doing it.
I call this generational healing: untangling your own mother line so a pattern doesn’t just live in you. It reaches back to the people who came before you, and forward to everyone who comes after.
