Episode 125: How to Manage Emotions When You See Your Balance Sheet
We’ve all been there … you’re just going along with your day, and you decide to check your numbers.
“Wait, what? That’s it? I thought I was making money!”
If that hasn’t happened to you, that’s amazing! Congrats. But if it has, you know the drop of the stomach, how you can start to feel like a failure … and then that damn imposter syndrome and self-doubt starts creeping in.
So what the heck do you do when that happens? I mean, you own a business, so learning how to deal with numbers without wanting to crawl under a rock and cry is critical. After all, your business needs you to keep showing up, being consistent, and bringing in revenue.
And with that in mind, because this is so important, here are the 3 steps I suggest you take (more detail in the podcast):
- Create a state change: If you’re sitting, stand; if you’re standing, walk or sit; etc.
- Take a deep breath and ask: What do I need to heal?
- Your numbers are a result: What decisions or changes do you need to make (or unmake) based on your results?
Listen, our relationship to money and numbers is really emotional. It can take a bit of work to unwind and really grow your stories, opinions, and ideas so you can have the level of success you really want.
It’s impossible to grow as a business owner and not grow as a human. And I’m all about giving you the tools you need to grow in both areas.
So, if you’ve ever had that moment when you just feel like you got punched in the gut by your numbers, it’s time to pop in those earphones. Let’s get to it.
