Episode 119: Why Your Emotions Are the Key to Your Success
Ugh. Don’t you hate crying? I mean, your nose gets all red and your eyes get puffy. It’s not exactly my go-to activity — and probably not yours either.
And then there’s anger. I did a whole other episode on anger and why I think it’s important (you can listen to that by clicking here, but honestly? I get scared when other people are angry. Even though I know they have a right to be.
What about regret? Loneliness? Disappointment? Most humans don’t love those feelings either.
But what about joy and pride? Laughing? Squealing with delight? Why don’t we have a problem with those things?
Isn’t it interesting that we tell little ones not to cry, but we encourage laughter? Most of that has to do with the fact that we’re more comfortable with the “happy” emotions and we don’t like the “sad” ones.
I want to focus on that for just a minute, because it’s that very idea — your emotions are making me uncomfortable — that has given birth to the high-functioning co-dependence I talk about so often. If you don’t know what that is, check out Episode 89 here.
All this makes me question our discomfort around these emotions.
- What if all emotions — even the ones we don’t enjoy as much — are trying to tell us something really important?
- What if listening to our emotions will direct us to take actions that will directly affect our ability to increase revenue? Or hire our next hire? Or become better writers or bosses or siblings or parents?
- What if … the one thing that can show us exactly what we need to do is the one thing we shove down and try to ignore?
Listen in for how you can learn to listen to your own emotions with a new perspective and an appreciation for the keys they hold to unlocking your success.
So pop in those earphones, and let’s get to it.
