Believe it or not, getting screamed at in the car was a moment that reminded me how important it is to recognize the humanity of others.
I was in the throes of adjusting to my daughter’s Type 1 diabetes diagnosis.
I’d headed to the grocery store, my mind trying to make sense of our new reality. While trying to piece together recipes that would reduce her insulin intake, I pulled out too far … and in response, a woman in her car just completely exploded in rage, SCREAMING at me out of her window.
She had no idea what was going on with me. But her reaction wasn't normal either, and I thought: I have no idea what's going on with her.
It almost made me tear up. I think my general fatigue and the shock I was still feeling about my daughter’s diagnosis also contributed.
What I took away from that experience is that we can show up and be great people even when other people aren't. We recognize our shared humanity and understand that we can help each other.
