Our need to compare ourselves to others and that push we all feel to have “more” is just part of being human these days.

But when it comes to being “internet famous,” it can really do severe damage to how we view ourselves and to how we spend our time.

In today’s episode I’ll walk you through two larger topics around this phenomenon:

Topic #1: The myth that more is better. Lynne Twist outlines this myth and deconstructs it in her book The Soul of Money. I recommend you pick this book up when you can. It’s really important, especially right now. You can click here to buy it.

I chose to call it the “never-ending” chase because if you live by the myth that “more is better,” you can’t win this game. Ever. Because no matter how many followers, views, or comments you have, more is better. So you can’t ever be satisfied.

    Yuck. What a mess.

Topic #2: Where you focus matters, and you need to turn your trust inward, and not wait for outside validation. What this means is that all that time you spend “out there” waiting for external validation, is time that you’re not spending on your business, with your family or on your hobbies, your health or your personal development.

To dive into why we do this, why we wait for external validation, I talk about ego boundaries in this episode and the collapse of ego boundaries.

As I always do, I’ll remind you that I’m not a therapist. These ideas are part of psychology, which I love to study, but that’s not my primary role. If you’d like to learn more about ego boundaries, I love the classic, The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck.

You can pick up the 25th-anniversary edition (See! I told you it was a classic!) by clicking here.

I truly have a love-hate relationship with social media, which I discuss in further detail in Episode #38, 3 Ways You Play Victim And How To Stop by clicking here.

If you’ve missed my recent changes in my own business because of the gross social media tactics employed by coaches, you can watch this episode of Coffee with Coach. It’s called “Confessions Of A Coach: I Hate My Industry.”

For now, I’ll be challenging you to look inward first. Listen to your own instincts and your own gifts before you question yourself by looking for outward validation.

Strangers on the internet, and their double-taps (or lack thereof) do not dictate your worth our your business.

Communication is a skill we can all be working on consistently that you can work on. But your ability to communicate what you do or share your ideas has nothing to do with the innate value of those ideas and your work.

If you’ve been feeling blue or down about social media lately/being internet famous, then this is the episode for you.

Pop in those earphones, and let’s get to it.
