Episode 38: 3 Ways You Play Victim And How To Stop

In this episode, I’m going to go over 3 ways you play victim, and how to stop.
Have you noticed lately that no one is at fault for anything? Like, literally, anything. We all want to play victim.
Couldn’t get your work done? It’s COVID’s fault.
Don’t like your neighbors? It’s because they’re stupid.
Can get along with people in other religions or political parties? It’s because they don’t get it.
Can I ask a question here? Where are all the grown-ups? Where’s the accountability and responsibility? Is everyone really this small? Can we not handle bumps, bruises, and challenges anymore?
This last weekend I watched the Netflix movie The Social Dilemma and I’ll be honest, it scared me. We have turned our ability to make decisions, control our impulses, and our critical thinking skills over to dings, reminders, and little red circles.
For years I’ve been calling our phones “Weapons of Mass Distraction” and now, I know more than ever, that’s absolutely what they are.
When you look out in our world right now, what do you see? Do you see fully functioning adults, taking control of their time and energy and focus? Or, do you see people staring at their weapons of mass distraction, completely oblivious to the life happening around them?
You guys, where’s our accountability in all this? Where can you be one of the grown-ups in the room who helps us turn this tide?
In my view, this is no longer a “nice to have” this is a necessity in our world right now. We need grown-ups who refuse to abdicate responsibility, who see where the world is headed and they’re willing to change their own behavior to support change in a larger sense. No more playing the victim.
In this week’s episode, I tell you the 3 red flags that will let you know you’ve slipped into victimhood thinking.
So, whenever you hear yourself say these things (either out loud or in your own head), you’ll know you’re slipping into submission, you’re allowing your life to be taken over by childlike thinking and other people’s agendas.
This move toward accountability is going to take all of us.
Every single one of us is going to have to look at where we pacify ourselves with our phones, where we avoid having tough conversations to go through the vapid “tap-tap, tap-tap” that’s so seductive.
Also, I give you a quick exercise you can use whenever you find yourself wanting to avoid your responsibilities. Whether it’s grocery shopping, preparing your next meal, or getting ready for a huge presentation.
In conclusion, every step in the right direction matters. For all of us. This will start with you, and it will grow.
Let’s do this. Together.
