Episode 191: September is the new January. Start Planning for Black Friday Now.
September madness is upon us! September is the new January, and if you run a business, you know – Black Friday, the holidays, and the end of Q4. Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.
Disclaimer: This is my favorite time of year, but I know it comes with stressors. I want you to take a deep breath with me and picture the end of the year. Embrace the feeling and remind yourself you are amazing.
Imagine it's the end of 2023 and you're blown away by what you've been able to do in your business. What did you accomplish? What are you proud of? And how can you get started on creating that feeling right now?
Now this can be mostly about your business, but because we’re not compartmentalized human beings, it might also be about family, your health, your finances and even your friendships.
Start your business planning Black Friday and the New Year now
I'm going to challenge you to take the first fifteen minutes of every day and make sure you're planning for the end of the year, that you're actually thinking about the people who need you and asking yourself where they are during these times. And how can you help?
The second thing I want to challenge you with is who you want in your life, in your business, and outside your business.
We’re still at a time where people are lonely; the fall season comes and people hunker down inside. Who do you want to be spending time with?
You will find more success if you’re surrounding yourself with people who are not only challenging themselves but are able to find time to rest. To find time to be with their families and chase their passions outside of their business, too.
As you're thinking towards the end of the year, I want you to incorporate all aspects of you. Women running businesses cannot shut down pieces of themselves and expect to be successful. It’s very challenging to be successful if you feel like there's a part of you locked away.
Who do you want to be working with?
As you're looking towards the end of the year, I want you to look at who you want to be working with at the end of the year. Is there somebody that you've wanted to hire? Or is there someone you’ve wanted to bring on to your team?
Is there a client that you really want? I want you to really think about that. Something happens for business owners and you get resigned… You felt connected to your work, you were stoked about it and then it didn’t happen. Nobody paid attention and all of a sudden you start to get resigned and you stop trying. It's time to get excited again.
It's time to remember who you want to hire. It's time to remember who you want to have in your business and who you want to have hiring you. Who do you want to be selling to? Who are the people you want in your world?
Plan for Black Friday ... or not
I don't think this is done enough, as I really want you to think through Black Friday and the reason I'm saying that is because you may not want to do it. I am so tired of everybody running around acting like you have to run your business the way everyone else runs their business. You do not. You can run your business in a way that works for you.
That might look like a pre-Halloween sale. Or a December flash sale. What might work for you is that you put something you love out into the world for two weeks, and then you pull it back off the shelf. There are so many ways for you to surprise, delight, excite, and connect with your clients and customers.
And let me tell you something: Everyone deletes almost everything on Black Friday. Some people might wait for that special sale or their favorite brand. Those are specific shoppers who already know what they’re looking for. It’s really clear and easy for them to commit once that deal lands in their inbox.
You could be one of those emails that get clicked, but you have to start talking about it now.
The other thing I really want to invite you to do is look at the holidays that you may not celebrate and touch upon them. I think at this time in our world, there are so many people who are trying to be performative.
What if you actually take a hot second and learn about something you don't know about right now? Wouldn't that be cool? There's so much you can do to be inclusive, thoughtful, and connected to all of the people who are waiting to hear from you. There are so many beautiful ways to do that.
Opportunity to plan for the new year
And finally, I will say this: I think, the one time that business owners can be super successful that so many people miss. But if you think about it now, gently, methodically, and calmly, you might come up with something really cool, and that is the week between Christmas and New Year.
So many people are sitting on the couch. They might be fighting with family members, they might have overeaten, they might be exhausted themselves. And they’re online looking for solutions.
Wouldn't it be cool if you were the person they found? Wouldn't it be cool if your business was the business they decided to work with because you were there for them that week? Think about how you can show up and delight your clients and customers in that last week of the calendar year. It's so much fun.
If there's somebody that you want to work with, reach out to them now and find out what that will take. If there's a client, you just now would be perfect for you to reach out to them and let them know you feel that way. It's time to reconnect, it's time to take control of your schedule and it's time to show up throughout the end of the year in a way that works for you.
Let's make this fall and this holiday season amazing.
